WhatsApp Introduces Channels Feature, Expanding Its Reach

WhatsApp is expanding the reach of its new Channels feature, making it available to users in over 150 countries. Initially introduced in June, Channels was initially accessible only to select organizations in Colombia and Singapore. Similar to Telegram’s messaging app, WhatsApp’s Channels feature allows users to receive updates from creators, organizations, and brands, streamlining content delivery from various sources into a single channel. Instagram had also introduced a similar feature earlier this year, known as broadcast channels.

With this broader rollout, WhatsApp is introducing several enhancements to the feature. This includes an improved directory that enables users to filter channels by country and sort them by newness, activity level, and popularity. Additionally, users can now use emojis to react to posts within channels. Admins responsible for managing channels will have the ability to edit their updates for up to 30 days before the platform removes the post from its servers.

WhatsApp is also welcoming “thousands” of new channels to the platform, including those operated by notable figures like Olivia Rodrigo, Major League Baseball (MLB), and Mark Zuckerberg. The platform is committed to continually adding more features to Channels based on user feedback. WhatsApp also plans to allow anyone to create a channel “in the coming months.” If you don’t see the Channels feature in your app yet, you can join the waitlist on mobile to receive notifications when it becomes available.
